The Maharashtra State Council of Educational Research and Training (MSCERT) has launched a career readiness programme for students from classes 9 to 12 in government schools for the academic year 2023-24. This initiative will be carried out in collaboration with a non-profit organisation, Antarang Foundation.

According to a press release for the launch, the programme will help approximately 70,000 students from classes 9-12 in government schools in Mumbai, Pune, Thane, and Osmanaba with quality career guidance.

This step is taken in the context of the National Curriculum Framework draft of 2023 which has recognised the importance of early career guidance. The NCERT has integrated career guidance and readiness into the high school system.

“MSCERT is steadfast in its commitment to provide our youth with the necessary tools to enter the workforce confidently and build aspirational and sustainable careers. What after 10th is the most pressing question faced by grade 9-10 students. This program will help solve this question for the students.” said Deputy Director of Coordination Department Kamladevi Awate.

CareerAware initiative focuses on career exploration for grades 9 and 10. Through psychometric tests, one-on-one counselling, interactions with experts and exposure visits, students are equipped to better discover their interests and aptitude, said the press release. This is expected to help students choose between going for higher education in Class 11, taking up a diploma or choosing vocational training.

CareeReady is meant for skill-building of students of 11 and 12 grades for better employability. This programme aims to improve their practical knowledge, communication skills, problem-solving, teamwork, critical thinking, and industry-specific skills through hands-on training and industry exposure.

“We hire qualified individuals who are then trained as career facilitators who go to the schools and conduct these sessions,” a representative of Antarang Foundation told The Indian Express. “Their goal is to do two sessions in a month. There are a total of 14 sessions in grade 9 and 11, and six sessions in grade 10 and 12.”
